That Baby Smell
One thing that
has always perplexed me is people who are fascinated with the smell of babies.
Yes. They do
smell wonderful after they emerge from a bath and get all slathered with baby
lotion.
But,
seriously. After a couple hours of doing what babies do - pooping, passing gas,
spitting up - that great smell is but a memory until the next bath rolls
around.
Reagan was
always a pretty sweet smelling baby. She was the first. So, there were wardrobe
changes everytime she spit up or even dribbled out a little milk. There were
bubble baths that lasted as long as she pleased. We used lotions that gave her
that fabulous baby smell.
McKinley had
her share of sweet smelling days, but not as many as Reagan. She was the second
child and with a big sister only 14 months older mommy had her hands full. Her
long bubble baths were few and far between. At least, until she was big enough
to bathe with her sister without the threat of drowning.
That brings us
to
Her premature
arrival left her with very sensitive skin. That means she should only bathe
once or twice a week to keep her skin from getting too dry and chapped.
Additionally,
both her acid reflux and her asthma cause her to drool like Pavlov's dog in a
bell shop.
Her sensitive
skin means none of the sweet baby smelling lotions. Just plain, unscented
lotion for her. Oh, and some odd smelling creams and powders for the constant
rash she has under her neck thanks to the river of drool.
Because the
weather has been so cold she is down to no more than one bath a week.
Last night her
daddy picked her up, gave her a quick snuggle and a kiss and then pronounced
"you smell like toe jam."
Ah, yes. That
baby smell.
